Mastering the spotlight

18 September 2025

The investment industry puts a high value on intellectual ability. We think everyone is rational actor making decisions based on data and clear analysis. We often forget how we present is a vital part of what makes us credible.

We set the tone for an online call, an in-person meeting or a speech from the way we greet our audience. How we use our voice and body language determines whether we are perceived as confident and credible or insecure and muddled.

Be compelling

There are many binary moments when you are building client connection. We need to give ourselves the best chance of getting the outcome we want in these win or loss situations.

Talking to a contact in a compelling manner when you first meet them at conference will determine whether they want to meet again. Being hospitable at a business lunch will make a client trust you. If you can behave like a broadcast journalist in a Teams call, your audience will listen to every word you say.

Valuing presentation skills

Yet we don’t recognise there are considerable skills needed to master all these situations or work with professionals to improve every aspect of client interaction.

Delivery is vital. Working with a leading voice and body language coach will help you to be calm so you are a relaxed and confident performer. You can perform at your best whether on stage, at a conference or in an online meeting.

While some organisations do provide training, it often focuses on only one aspect – how to give a good speech and not teaching you how to be compelling over a video call. And too often these skills are delivered in one training event rather than being continuously monitored and improved.

If you understand the risks of allowing your team to operate with imperfect presentation skills and want the grasp the opportunities of mastering the spotlight, get in touch!
